Christmas cheer filled the air on December 14, 2023, as Action Station hosted a heart-warming Christmas Event that welcomed the residents of South Tyneside. Attendees had the chance to connect with our dedicated team, enthusiastic volunteers, and valuable community partners.
The event proved to be a wonderful platform for engaging conversations with esteemed guests from the Department of Work and Pension (DWP), South Tyneside Council, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS), and Northumbria Police. Our guests also included representatives from organizations committed to health and wellbeing services, such as NHS, Health Watch, Let's Talk Team, A Better U, Every Turn Mental Health, First Contact Clinical Health, and The Studio @ CIC.
Happy at Home, a support system for the elderly and lonely, and Northern Rights, an organization aiding disadvantaged individuals in gaining skills and confidence, were among the valuable guests. Additionally, representatives from adult learning course providers like WEA and Triage, as well as organizations assisting unemployed individuals like Back to Work and South Shields Job Centre, added to the diversity of our event.
In the midst of the festive atmosphere, guests had the opportunity to explore and purchase a variety of delightful crafts. They indulged in healthy soups, enjoyed a cuppa, and savoured mince pies and sweets. The Christmas Event was not just about celebrating the season; it was an opportunity for everyone to come together, share in the joy, and forge meaningful connections.
Action Station consistently organises several events throughout the year, providing numerous opportunities for engagement, networking, and the simple pleasure of being in the company of others. We look forward to continuing these efforts and creating more memorable moments in the future.

AGM 2023

21 November 2023

Action Station's Annual General Meeting took place on November 21, 2023, the meeting was attended by Action Station's chairperson, board members, staff, volunteers, partner organisations, and friends of the center. The agenda covered a welcome session, presentation of the annual report for 2022-23, the election of trustees, company secretary, deputy company secretary, and the appointment of independent examiners.

Angela Lishman, the outgoing chairperson, opened the meeting by acknowledging Action Station's impactful work over the past year. While highlighting positive aspects such as increased footfall and a vibrant atmosphere, she candidly addressed the financial challenges the organization faced. Gratitude was expressed to Stephen Clark for his unwavering dedication in securing funding and grants, including a significant contribution from the lottery. Angela expressed appreciation for the ongoing support from funders and emphasized the collaborative efforts with esteemed partners, underscoring their role in enhancing the quality of life for the people of South Tyneside.

Following her report, Angela announced her decision to step down as chairperson and transition to a role within the board of trustees. Heather Lee was introduced as the new chairperson, assuming leadership responsibilities.

Stephen Clark, the chief executive, provided insights into the most challenging period faced by Action Station in terms of financial and operational security. To address these challenges, a new three-year organisational and funding strategy was developed. Measures included staff reductions, renegotiation of service contracts to reduce expenditures, and implementation of a new internal accountancy system.

Stephen reported that Action Station has successfully stabilized its financial situation, increased rental income, secured major grants for the next three years, and solidified its position as a community hub. The organisation expanded partnerships and maximized the center's potential during this period and also launched a new website.

The meeting also highlighted the crucial role of esteemed partners, and particularly acknowledging the outstanding volunteer program led by Kym Lockney. Testimonials from clients emphasized the positive impact of employment support programs, including job/IT clubs and digital inclusion courses. The community café's partnership with local food banks was underscored as a significant contribution to the community.

Action Station persists in its commitment to continue delivering outstanding services, focusing on employability, wellbeing, and community support. Initiatives such as open days for volunteers and projects aimed at addressing loneliness, promoting health, and providing financial and welfare support were emphasized as integral to Action Station's ongoing goals. The organisation looks forward to sustaining its positive impact on the community.
