Pre-ESOL Summer Learning & Community Workshops

August 2026

To ensure continuity during the summer break when regular ESOL classes are paused, Action Station delivered a four-week series of interactive summer workshops for refugee and asylum-seeking adults. Held every Tuesday in August 2026, these sessions provided a supportive space for absolute beginners and pre-ESOL learners to maintain their routine, practise practical English, and stay connected with the community. Combining hands-on letter tiles, visual matching games, local library resources, and transport vocabulary, the workshops helped reduce isolation while strengthening everyday communication skills.

The full report includes:

  • Continuity & Purpose: Why summer learning bridges the gap for learners facing language and social isolation.
  • Interactive Learning Activities: Breakdown of practical exercises—from wooden tile name-building and team alphabet races to newspaper word hunts and transport matching games.
  • Confidence & Daily Skills: How sessions supported real-world tasks like spelling names for GP appointments, reading food labels, and buying public transport tickets.
  • Community & Police Engagement: Local volunteers and police officers joining sessions to foster familiarity, trust, and mutual support.
  • Volunteer Leadership: The progression of a local volunteer moving from assisting in early sessions to independently facilitating workshops.
  • Learner Aspirations: Personal goals shared by attendees, ranging from career ambitions (accountant, electrician, tailor, doctor) to managing daily life independently.
